It has been over a month since my last post, and so much has changed in just that time.
Our sweet dog Tex became such an escape artist in the past month or so, ever since we had him fixed. As soon as he longer had anything to get caught up on the fence, he started jumping over. We spent endless nights and weekends repairing fences, building a $300 6-foot gate across the back of the carport, adding additional wire fencing to the top of existing fences, etc. He continued to get out, so we finally resigned to tying him up, which we hated. When Jake came home for lunch one day, Tex had jumped over the fence while tied up and could not put all four legs on the ground. That was the end of his long tie rope. We even attached a 30 pound chain to him thinking he could still run around but that it was too heavy for him to jump over. We were wrong. Our back yard is next to a small community park with a field and a playground, and Tex LOVES kids. So when he sees kids playing, and they come to the fence to pet him, he just jumps over the fence to go play with them. You should have seen them chasing him with that huge heavy chain around his neck! The kids loved to play with him, and he never ran away, but that is too big of a liability for us. He also loves to go to the neighbors and bring all of their trash and shoes into our yard. So when we realized that we could not keep him in the yard, we decided that we had to give him away to someone with a lot of land that he could run and play and not be fenced in or tied up. We actually ended up giving him to the people we had gotten him from, so he will be with his mom. The guy called us a few nights ago, and the conversation went like this:
Guy: What do you do to get this dog to eat?
Jake: Umm...what do you mean?
Guy: Well, I put the food you gave me in a bucket for him. He looked at me like I was stupid and proceeded to dump it out on the ground. I think he is protesting you giving him away.
That sounds like Tex alright. He always dumps his food out or puts leaves in there with it. Weird dog. But we miss him terribly. It just was not best for him to be here, any way we could have kept him in would have been cruel and inhumane.
